It identifies the overarching approach as one of silencing: lesbianism has not only been ignored or regarded as unimaginable, but was deliberately excluded from legal discourses. A series of case studies ranging from 1746 to 2013 from parliamentary debates to individual prosecutions shed light on the complex process of regulation through silencing. They illuminate its evolution over three centuries and explore when and why it has been breached. The answers Derry uncovers can be fully understood only in the context of surrounding social and legal developments which are also considered. Lesbianism and the Criminal Law makes an important contribution to the growing bodies of literature on feminism, sexuality and the law and the legal history of sexual offences. 606 $aSex and law 606 $aLaw?History 606 $aLaw?Philosophy 606 $aLaw 606 $aGender identity 606 $aSex crimes 606 $aCriminal law 606 $aGender, Sexuality and Law$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/1BB030 606 $aLegal History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/726000 606 $aTheories of Law, Philosophy of Law, Legal History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/R11011 606 $aGender and Sexuality$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X35010 606 $aSexual Offending$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/1BG020 606 $aCriminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/R13006 615 0$aSex and law. 615 0$aLaw?History. 615 0$aLaw?Philosophy. 615 0$aLaw. 615 0$aGender identity. 615 0$aSex crimes. 615 0$aCriminal law. 615 14$aGender, Sexuality and Law. 615 24$aLegal History. 615 24$aTheories of Law, Philosophy of Law, Legal History. 615 24$aGender and Sexuality. 615 24$aSexual Offending. 615 24$aCriminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law. 676 $a345.42009 700 $aDerry$b Caroline$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0788324 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910373887703321 996 $aLesbianism and the Criminal Law$91757128 997 $aUNINA
