Though there are many reasons for this, monastic leaders are confronted by the reality of fewer communities, monks, and nuns nonetheless. At the same time, many younger Christians are rediscovering the rich heritage of the monastic tradition. Though they themselves might not be called to join a traditional monastery, they are eager to appropriate monastic practices in their own lives. This had led to a movement known as the ?new monasticism? or ?secular monasticism.? Despite lacking a unified vision and any central organization, these new/secular monastics are attempting, in their own ways, to carry on the tradition and practices of Christian monasticism. As well, there is a movement within historical Christian monasteries to pour new wine into old wineskins. Traditional forms of monasticism are also generally flourishing in developing nations, breathing new life into monasticism. This volume looks at the current monastic landscape to assess where monasticism stands and to imagine ways in which it will grow in the future, leading not only to a renewed Christian monasticism but to new monasticisms. 606 $aMonasticism and religious orders 606 $aSpiritual life$xChristianity 610 $aartist 610 $areligion and ecology 610 $aCatholic monasticism 610 $areligious pluralism 610 $aCentering Prayer 610 $aNew Monastic Communities 610 $alay contemplatives 610 $aAnselm 610 $aenvironmental humanities 610 $anew monasticism 610 $aProslogion 610 $acreativity 610 $adouble monasteries 610 $amonogamy 610 $areligious ambiguity 610 $aVatican Council II 610 $amonastic rules 610 $ahistory of monasticism 610 $areligious life 610 $aart 610 $avows 610 $adevelopment 610 $aspiritual ecology 610 $agender cohabitation 610 $aAfrica 610 $amonk 610 $acommunity 610 $aspirituality 610 $acontemplative Christianity 610 $aspiritual formation 610 $aintentional community 610 $agreening of religion 610 $amonotheism 610 $amonasticism 610 $aproof of God's existence 610 $aBeguine 610 $acultural transfer 610 $aOrthodox monasticism 610 $alandscape 615 0$aMonasticism and religious orders. 615 0$aSpiritual life$xChristianity. 676 $a255 702 $aPeters$b Greg$f1971- 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910372784403321 996 $aExploring the future of Christian monasticisms$93397604 997 $aUNINA
