Why do they face such an ordeal to reach European countries where their long-term prospects are often dismal? The Big Gamble answers these questions through a multi-sited ethnography with refugees, their families back, smugglers and relatives in the diaspora. By visiting family homes in Eritrea, living with refugees in camps and urban peripheries across Ethiopia, Sudan and Italy, the author untangles everyday challenges as well as images, desires and feelings of young Eritreans pursuing their desired destination in a context of protracted crisis and long-term displacement. Throughout the book the author shows the importance of recognizing the space for choices in contemporary refugee movements. It argues that imagination, morality and emotion are crucial elements to understand the trajectories and the motivations of those who bet not only their resources but also their lives to seek asylum in Europe. 606 $aEritreans$xSocial aspects$zEurope 606 $aAfricans$xMigrations$xSocial aspects 607 $aEurope 610 $aafrica. 610 $ablurred boundaries. 610 $acamps. 610 $aemotions. 610 $aeritrea. 610 $aeritreans. 610 $aethiopia. 610 $aeuropean countries. 610 $afamilies. 610 $afamily expectations. 610 $afamily homes. 610 $aforced migration. 610 $ahardships. 610 $aitaly. 610 $amediterranean sea. 610 $arefugee populations. 610 $arefugees. 610 $arisk their lives. 610 $asmugglers. 610 $asmuggling. 610 $asudan. 610 $atransnational marriages. 610 $aurban peripheries. 610 $avisa officers. 610 $avoluntary migration. 610 $avoyages. 615 0$aEritreans$xSocial aspects 615 0$aAfricans$xMigrations$xSocial aspects. 676 $a304.840635 700 $aBelloni$b Milena$f1985-$0944479 801 2$bUkMaJRU 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910372745303321 996 $aThe big gamble$92132032 997 $aUNINA
