Drawing on historical research on the place of the public in public health in Britain from the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948, the book presents a new perspective on the relationship between state and citizen. Focusing on health education, health surveys, heart disease and the development of vaccination policy and practice, the book establishes that ?the public? was not one thing but many. It considers how public health policy makers and practitioners imagined the public or publics. These publics were not mere constructions; they had agency and the ability to ?speak back? to public health. The nature of publicness changed during the latter half of the twentieth century, and this book argues that the relationship between the public and public health offers a powerful lens through which to examine such shifts. 410 0$aMedicine and Biomedical Sciences in Modern History 606 $aPublic health$zGreat Britain$xHistory$z20th century 607 $aGreat Britain$xPolitics and government$y1945-1964 607 $aGreat Britain$xSocial conditions$y1945- 607 $aGreat Britain$xSocial policy$xHistory 610 $aHistory 610 $aGreat Britain?History 610 $aMedicine?History 610 $aMedical policy 610 $aHistory, Modern 610 $aSocial history 615 0$aPublic health$xHistory 676 $a941 676 $a362.1094109045 700 $aMold$b Alex$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0904517 702 $aClark$b Peder$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 702 $aMillward$b Gareth$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 702 $aPayling$b Daisy$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910372740603321 996 $aPlacing the public in public health in post-war Britain, 1948-2012$92914658 997 $aUNINA
