Changes in the position of women are crucial to the reconfiguration of state-society relations and to the discussions between Islamist and secular trends. Theoretically framed and based on new empirical data, this edited volume explores women?s activism and political representation as well as discursive changes, with a particular focus on secular and Islamic feminism, and changes in popular opinions on women?s position in society. While the contributors express optimistic as well as more pessimistic views for the future, they agree that this is a period of uncertainty for women in the region, and that support by ruling elites towards women?s rights remains ambiguous and double-edged. Hanane Darhour is Associate Professor at the Polydisciplinary Faculty of Ouarzazate, Ibn Zohr University, Morocco. She is the author of Implementation of Electoral Gender Quotas: Evidence from the 2002 Moroccan Elections (2012). Drude Dahlerup is Professor of Political Science at Stockholm University, Sweden, and Honorary Professor at Roskilde University, Denmark. She has published extensively on gender and politics, gender quota systems, the history of women?s movements, and theories of feminism, including Has Democracy Failed Women? (2018). 410 0$aGender and Politics,$x2662-5814 606 $aIdentity politics 606 $aDemocracy 606 $aReligion and politics 606 $aEconomic development 606 $aSocial change 606 $aMiddle East?Politics and government 606 $aAfrica?Politics and government 606 $aPolitics and Gender$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911260 606 $aDemocracy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911050 606 $aPolitics and Religion$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911250 606 $aDevelopment and Social Change$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/913030 606 $aMiddle Eastern Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911160 606 $aAfrican Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911090 615 0$aIdentity politics. 615 0$aDemocracy. 615 0$aReligion and politics. 615 0$aEconomic development. 615 0$aSocial change. 615 0$aMiddle East?Politics and government. 615 0$aAfrica?Politics and government. 615 14$aPolitics and Gender. 615 24$aDemocracy. 615 24$aPolitics and Religion. 615 24$aDevelopment and Social Change. 615 24$aMiddle Eastern Politics. 615 24$aAfrican Politics. 676 $a305.420956 676 $a305.420956 702 $aDarhour$b Hanane$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aDahlerup$b Drude$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910369928503321 996 $aDouble-Edged Politics on Women?s Rights in the MENA Region$92499636 997 $aUNINA
