The author maps regional features of rising authoritarianism that mirror larger global trends and, in doing so, outlines the core mechanisms of authoritarian rule in the Balkans, with a particular focus on Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia. These mechanisms include the creation of constant crises, the use of external powers to balance outside influences, as well as state capture. The authoritarian patterns exist alongside formal democratic institutions, resulting in competitive authoritarian regimes that use social polarization to retain power. As the countries of the Western Balkans aspire, at least formally, to join the European Union, authoritarianism is often informal. He coordinates the Balkans in Europe Policy Advisory Group (BiEPAG) and has been a visiting professor and fellow at Cornell, NYU, Central European University, and LSE. 410 0$aNew Perspectives on South-East Europe,$x2662-5857 606 $aDemocracy 606 $aWorld politics 606 $aPolitical science 606 $aRegionalism 606 $aPolitical leadership 606 $aEuropean Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911130 606 $aDemocracy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911050 606 $aPolitical History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911080 606 $aGovernance and Government$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911220 606 $aRegionalism$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/912050 606 $aPolitical Leadership$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911230 607 $aEurope$xPolitics and government 615 0$aDemocracy. 615 0$aWorld politics. 615 0$aPolitical science. 615 0$aRegionalism. 615 0$aPolitical leadership. 615 14$aEuropean Politics. 615 24$aDemocracy. 615 24$aPolitical History. 615 24$aGovernance and Government. 615 24$aRegionalism. 615 24$aPolitical Leadership. 676 $a320.94 700 $aBieber$b Florian$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0298470 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910369924303321 996 $aThe Rise of Authoritarianism in the Western Balkans$92210779 997 $aUNINA
