By applying multiple linear regression analyses to a new data set on multi-party elections in Sub-Saharan Africa, the study investigates the relationship between political mobilizations and electoral competitiveness. It finds that the more societal groups engage in political mobilizations, such as protests and strikes, the more competitive elections become. Based on these results, the author argues for a change in the policies of international democracy assistance programs. The study?s findings suggest that efforts to promote democracy would likely be more successful if international donors focused their support on organizations that have active constituencies and are willing to use their mobilization capacity to address ruling elites with political or socio-economic grievances. 410 0$aAdvances in African Economic, Social and Political Development,$x2198-7262 606 $aAfrica?Politics and government 606 $aDemocracy 606 $aSocial justice 606 $aHuman rights 606 $aElections 606 $aPolitical sociology 606 $aAfrican Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911090 606 $aDemocracy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911050 606 $aSocial Justice, Equality and Human Rights$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X33070 606 $aElectoral Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911070 606 $aPolitical Sociology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X22170 615 0$aAfrica?Politics and government. 615 0$aDemocracy. 615 0$aSocial justice. 615 0$aHuman rights. 615 0$aElections. 615 0$aPolitical sociology. 615 14$aAfrican Politics. 615 24$aDemocracy. 615 24$aSocial Justice, Equality and Human Rights. 615 24$aElectoral Politics. 615 24$aPolitical Sociology. 676 $a320.967 676 $a967 700 $aStuppert$b Wolfgang$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01059521 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910369917503321 996 $aPolitical Mobilizations and Democratization in Sub-Saharan Africa$92506776 997 $aUNINA
