During decades of forced sociopolitical and economic upheaval in Tsang Province of China's Tibetan Autonomous Region--with medical texts destroyed or hidden, teachers and lamas imprisoned or otherwise silenced, and almost all trade in medicinal ingredients halted--they had little hope that their 'science of healing' (Sowa Rigpa) would again flourish. Today, however, Tibetan medicine is in vogue, promoted by the Chinese Communist Party as a pillar industry of Tibet and a valuable asset of Tibetans' 'nationality minority culture.' For urban Tibetans, traditional medicine is one of the few areas where a relatively liberal expression of Tibetan identity and language is possible. In urban, medically pluralistic settings it is an easily available resource, while in remote areas, its practice and transmission to the younger generation faces many challenges. The passing away of the last practitioner of a certain pulse-reading or compounding of an herbal formula, for example, could mean the end of a long chain of transmission. For reasons of lack of access, continued repression of nonofficial histories, fear, and loss of living memory, Tibetan medical doctors--the so-called amchi--have been little studied. This volume presents their story, showing how practitioners from Tsang have retained crucial links in the teaching of medical knowledge despite the near-annihilation of monastic Buddhism and 'medical houses." 410 0$aStudies on ethnic groups in China. 606 $aMemoire$xAspect social$zChine$zTibet (Chine)$y21e siecle$2ram 606 $aMemoire$xAspect social$zChine$zTibet (Chine)$y20e siecle$2ram 606 $aAnthropologie medicale$zChine$zTibet (Chine)$xHistoire$y21e siecle$2ram 606 $aAnthropologie medicale$zChine$zTibet (Chine)$xHistoire$y20e siecle$2ram 606 $aEthnomedecine$zChine$zTibet (Chine)$xHistoire$y21e siecle$2ram 606 $aEthnomedecine$zChine$zTibet (Chine)$xHistoire$y20e siecle$2ram 606 $aMedecins tibetains$xHistoire$y21e siecle$2ram 606 $aMedecins tibetains$xHistoire$y20e siecle$2ram 606 $aMedecine tibetaine$xHistoire$y21e siecle$2ram 606 $aMedecine tibetaine$xHistoire$y20e siecle$2ram 606 $aSocial networks$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01122678 606 $aSocial history$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01919811 606 $aSocial change$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01122310 606 $aPhysicians$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01062841 606 $aMemory$xSocial aspects$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01015940 606 $aMedicine, Tibetan$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01015383 606 $aEthnicity$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00916034 606 $aChangement social$zChine$zRe?gion autonome du Tibet$xHistoire 606 $aEthnicite?$zChine$zRe?gion autonome du Tibet$xHistoire 606 $aRe?seaux sociaux$zChine$zRe?gion autonome du Tibet$xHistoire 606 $aMe?moire$xAspect social$zChine$zRe?gion autonome du Tibet$xHistoire 606 $aMe?decins$zChine$zRe?gion autonome du Tibet$xHistoire 606 $aMe?decine tibe?taine$xHistoire$y21e sie?cle 606 $aMe?decine tibe?taine$xHistoire$y20e sie?cle 606 $aSocial change$zChina$zTibet Autonomous Region$xHistory 606 $aEthnicity$zChina$zTibet Autonomous Region$xHistory 606 $aSocial networks$zChina$zTibet Autonomous Region$xHistory 606 $aMemory$xSocial aspects$zChina$zTibet Autonomous Region$xHistory 606 $aPhysicians$zChina$zTibet Autonomous Region$xHistory 606 $aMedicine, Tibetan$xHistory$y21st century 606 $aMedicine, Tibetan$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aChina$zTibet Autonomous Region$2fast 607 $aChina$xRelations$zChine$zRe?gion autonome du Tibet 607 $aRe?gion autonome du Tibet (Chine)$xRelations$zChine 607 $aRe?gion autonome du Tibet (Chine)$xConditions sociales 607 $aTibet Autonomous Region (China)$xSocial conditions 608 $aHistory. 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aMemoire$xAspect social 615 0$aMemoire$xAspect social 615 0$aAnthropologie medicale$xHistoire 615 0$aAnthropologie medicale$xHistoire 615 0$aEthnomedecine$xHistoire 615 0$aEthnomedecine$xHistoire 615 0$aMedecins tibetains$xHistoire 615 0$aMedecins tibetains$xHistoire 615 0$aMedecine tibetaine$xHistoire 615 0$aMedecine tibetaine$xHistoire 615 0$aSocial networks. 615 0$aSocial history. 615 0$aSocial change. 615 0$aPhysicians. 615 0$aMemory$xSocial aspects. 615 0$aMedicine, Tibetan. 615 0$aEthnicity. 615 0$aChangement social$xHistoire. 615 0$aEthnicite?$xHistoire. 615 0$aRe?seaux sociaux$xHistoire. 615 0$aMe?moire$xAspect social$xHistoire. 615 0$aMe?decins$xHistoire. 615 0$aMe?decine tibe?taine$xHistoire 615 0$aMe?decine tibe?taine$xHistoire 615 0$aSocial change$xHistory. 615 0$aEthnicity$xHistory. 615 0$aSocial networks$xHistory. 615 0$aMemory$xSocial aspects$xHistory. 615 0$aPhysicians$xHistory. 615 0$aMedicine, Tibetan$xHistory 615 0$aMedicine, Tibetan$xHistory 676 $a610.951/5 700 $aHofer$b Theresia$f(19..-....).$4aut$0942250 702 $aHarrell$b Stevan$f(1947-....).$4aui 712 02$aUniversity of Washington.$bLibraries,$4fnd$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/fnd 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910367644103321 996 $aMedicine and Memory in Tibet$92126251 997 $aUNINA
