This boldly original book traces the evolution of documentary film and photography as they migrated onto digital platforms during the first decades of the twenty-first century. Kris Fallon examines the emergence of several key media forms-social networking and crowdsourcing, video games and virtual environments, big data and data visualization-and demonstrates the formative influence of political conflict and the documentary film tradition on their evolution and cultural integration. Focusing on particular moments of political rupture, Fallon argues that the ideological rifts of the period inspired the adoption and adaptation of newly available technologies to encourage social mobilization and political action, a function performed for much of the previous century by independent documentary film. Positioning documentary film and digital media side by side in the political sphere, Fallon asserts that "truth" now lies in a new set of media forms and discursive practices that implicitly shape the documentation of everything from widespread cultural spectacles like wars and presidential elections to more invisible or isolated phenomena like the Abu Ghraib torture scandal or the "fake news" debates of 2016. 606 $aDigital media$xPolitical aspects$zUnited States$y21st century 606 $aDocumentary mass media$zUnited States$y21st century 606 $aMass media$xObjectivity$zUnited States$y21st century 606 $aOnline social networks$xPolitical aspects$y21st century 606 $aFilms, cinema$2bicssc 606 $aMedia studies$2bicssc 606 $aPolitics & government$2bicssc 610 $a21st century. 610 $aabu ghraib torture. 610 $abig data. 610 $acrowdsourcing. 610 $acultural integration. 610 $adata visualization. 610 $adigital platforms. 610 $adocumentary film tradition. 610 $adocumentary film. 610 $aevolution. 610 $afake news. 610 $aformative influence. 610 $aideological rifts. 610 $akey media forms. 610 $aphotography. 610 $apolitical action. 610 $apolitical conflict. 610 $apolitical rupture. 610 $apresidential elections. 610 $ascandal. 610 $asocial networking. 610 $avideo games. 610 $avirtual environments. 610 $awars. 615 0$aDigital media$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aDocumentary mass media 615 0$aMass media$xObjectivity 615 0$aOnline social networks$xPolitical aspects 615 7$aFilms, cinema 615 7$aMedia studies 615 7$aPolitics & government 676 $a302.23/10973 700 $aFallon$b Kris$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0989490 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910367592003321 996 $aWhere Truth Lies$92263044 997 $aUNINA
