This book provides a fresh, updated and science-based perspective on the current status and prospects of the diverse array of topics related to the potato, and was written by distinguished scientists with hands-on global experience in research aspects related to potato. The potato is the third most important global food crop in terms of consumption. Being the only vegetatively propagated species among the world?s main five staple crops creates both issues and opportunities for the potato: on the one hand, this constrains the speed of its geographic expansion and its options for international commercialization and distribution when compared with commodity crops such as maize, wheat or rice. On the other, it provides an effective insulation against speculation and unforeseen spikes in commodity prices, since the potato does not represent a good traded on global markets. These two factors highlight the underappreciated and underrated role of the potato as a dependable nutrition security crop, one that can mitigate turmoil in world food supply and demand and political instability in some developing countries. Increasingly, the global role of the potato has expanded from a profitable crop in developing countries to a crop providing income and nutrition security in developing ones. This book will appeal to academics and students of crop sciences, but also policy makers and other stakeholders involved in the potato and its contribution to humankind?s food security. . 606 $aAgriculture 606 $aNutrition    606 $aPlant breeding 606 $aFood?Biotechnology 606 $aAgricultural economics 606 $aAgriculture$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/L11006 606 $aNutrition$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/C18000 606 $aPlant Breeding/Biotechnology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/L24060 606 $aFood Science$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/C15001 606 $aAgricultural Economics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/W47000 610 $aLife sciences 610 $aAgriculture 610 $aNutrition    610 $aPlant breeding 610 $aFood?Biotechnology 610 $aAgricultural economics 615 0$aAgriculture. 615 0$aNutrition   . 615 0$aPlant breeding. 615 0$aFood?Biotechnology. 615 0$aAgricultural economics. 615 14$aAgriculture. 615 24$aNutrition. 615 24$aPlant Breeding/Biotechnology. 615 24$aFood Science. 615 24$aAgricultural Economics. 676 $a630 700 $aCampos$b Hugo$4edt$0990126 702 $aCampos$b Hugo$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aOrtiz$b Oscar$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910367257303321 996 $aThe Potato Crop$93362516 997 $aUNINA
