Une exposition-dossier (19 juin - 15 novembre 2010) et un colloque ont permis de revenir sur la collection de ce Nantais qui eut une carrière diplomatique à la longévité étonnante, traversant les régimes politiques de la monarchie à l?Empire. Ses nombreux voyages et missions (Naples, Rome, Florence, Gênes?) lui offrirent la possibilité d?amasser une imposante collection de chefs-d??uvre (dont les trois La Tour entrés sous des noms différents), avec une prédilection marquée pour la peinture de la Péninsule, du XIIIe au XVIIe siècle. Il était donc particulièrement intéressant de comparer le collectionnisme de François Cacault ? et son goût pour les Primitifs, par exemple ? avec celui de ses contemporains, qui ont fait l?objet d?études importantes ces dernières années (Fesch, Fabre, Wicar). La constitution de la collection a également été replacée dans le contexte des marchés de l?art italien et français, alors en pleine mutation. François Cacault et son frère, Pierre, avaient fondé un musée-école à Clisson, à partir de ces peintures, mais également de 64 albums factices rassemblant plus de 7?000 gravures, offrant un panorama complet de l?histoire de la peinture européenne, classée par écoles (florentine, lombarde, allemande, flamande, hollandaise, française?).
