The moment of disclosure reveals an epistemic incompatibility between scientific fact and social meaning in relation to sex. Attempting to assess the bio-psychosocial implications of this dilemma highlights a complex historic antagonism between fact and meaning making satisfactory resolution of this dilemma difficult. Drawing on David Hume, WVO Quine and Michel Foucault the author presents an integrative model, which views scientific fact and social meaning as codetermining threads in one fabric of knowledge. From this epistemic perspective, the ethical dilemma is understood as a tear in the fabric signifying a rupturing of ontological integrity. To mend this tear and resolve the ethical dilemma three metaphysical perspectives are considered: essentialism, naturalism and emergentism. The book?s unique features include: an exploration of the impact of diagnostic disclosure on people with atypical sex (intersex); a synthesis of the epistemic perspectives of social and natural science facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration; a critical evaluation of three metaphysical perspectives on atypical sex (intersex); the application of Hume?s epistemological and moral distinctions to contemporary biomedicine and bioethics. The book?s target audience includes academics, students and professionals whose work intersects the natural and social sciences, and individuals interested in the metaphysics, epistemology and meta-ethics of sex. 410 0$aPhilosophy and Medicine,$x0376-7418 ;$v131 606 $aBioethics 606 $aMedical ethics 606 $aHuman body?Social aspects 606 $aPoststructuralism 606 $aIntersex Persons$xpsychology 606 $aPhilosophy 606 $aHealth Knowledge, Attitudes, Practice 606 $aBioethics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/E14010 606 $aTheory of Medicine/Bioethics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/H66000 606 $aSociology of the Body$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X22230 606 $aPoststructuralism$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/E46000 615 0$aBioethics. 615 0$aMedical ethics. 615 0$aHuman body?Social aspects. 615 0$aPoststructuralism. 615 12$aIntersex Persons$xpsychology. 615 22$aPhilosophy. 615 22$aHealth Knowledge, Attitudes, Practice. 615 14$aBioethics. 615 24$aTheory of Medicine/Bioethics. 615 24$aSociology of the Body. 615 24$aPoststructuralism. 676 $a171.7 676 $a306.7685 700 $aDelimata$b Natalie$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0865603 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910349542803321 996 $aArticulating Intersex: A Crisis at the Intersection of Scientific Facts and Social Ideals$91931841 997 $aUNINA
