The book argues that 'mastaans' are Bangladeshi mafia groups that operate in a market for crime, violence and social protection. It considers the crimes mastaans commit, the ways they divide labour, and how and why street children become involved in these groups. The book explores how street children are hired by 'mastaans', to carry weapons, sell drugs, collect extortion money, commit political violence and conduct contract killings. The book argues that these young people are neither victims nor offenders; they are instead 'illicit child labourers', doing what they can to survive on the streets. This book adds to the emerging fields of the sociology of crime and deviance in South Asia and 'Southern criminology'. 410 0$aPalgrave Advances in Criminology and Criminal Justice in Asia,$x2946-2886 606 $aJuvenile delinquents 606 $aCriminology 606 $aVictims of crimes 606 $aOrganized crime 606 $aCriminal behavior 606 $aCorrections 606 $aPunishment 606 $aYouth Offending and Juvenile Justice 606 $aAsian Criminology 606 $aVictimology 606 $aOrganized Crime 606 $aCriminal Behavior 606 $aPrison and Punishment 615 0$aJuvenile delinquents. 615 0$aCriminology. 615 0$aVictims of crimes. 615 0$aOrganized crime. 615 0$aCriminal behavior. 615 0$aCorrections. 615 0$aPunishment. 615 14$aYouth Offending and Juvenile Justice. 615 24$aAsian Criminology. 615 24$aVictimology. 615 24$aOrganized Crime. 615 24$aCriminal Behavior. 615 24$aPrison and Punishment. 676 $a362.7086942 676 $a364.1060954922 700 $aAtkinson-Sheppard$b Sally$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0787483 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910349372103321 996 $aThe Gangs of Bangladesh$92499341 997 $aUNINA
