The eldest son of migrant Sephardic Jews, Marshall's brilliant academic career at Raffles Institution was brought to an abrupt end when he collapsed from tuberculosis. Sent away to recuperate in Switzerland, Marshall not only learnt the French language but also imbibed the French ideals of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity and returned a strong opponent of colonialism. Qualifying as a barrister in half the normal time, he rose to become Singapore's greatest criminal and constitutional lawyer. In 1955, he unexpectedly found himself the leader of the Labour Front and Singapore's first Chief Minister. His fourteen tumultuous months in office led to the eventual withdrawal of the British from Singapore but his emotional personality and impatience made him an unlikely politician. In the twilight of his career, Marshall was appointed Singapore's first ambassador to France. This is the story of this extraordinary man who was, for many, Singapore's "missionary of democracy". Using previously unavailable sources, author Kevin Tan chronicles the remarkable life, times and achievements of the man many regarded as "Singapore's Conscience". 606 $aStatesmen$zSingapore$vBiography 615 0$aStatesmen 676 $a959.5705092 700 $aTan$b Kevin$0849894 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910345149003321 996 $aMarshall of Singapore$92565189 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02518nam 2200553 a 450 001 9910815856903321 005 20240410151131.0 010 $a1-340-97106-2 010 $a1-4094-1602-X 035 $a(CKB)2670000000054536 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000483737 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11338874 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000483737 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10572891 035 $a(PQKB)10720405 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3002268 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3002268 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10424652 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL751032 035 $a(OCoLC)929147413 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000054536 100 $a20101207e20101897 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 04$aThe Danish expeditions to Greenland in 1605, 1606, and 1607$b[electronic resource] $eto which is added, Captain James Hall's voyage to Greenland in 1612 /$fedited by C.C.A.
