Paris 210 $aParis $cPublications scientifiques du Muséum$d2019 215 $a1 online resource (454 p.) 311 $a2-85653-604-2 330 $aFor the first time, this book makes available to a wide readership, not only to an educated audience, high-resolution reproductions of all the 258 paintings of gourds of the genus Cucurbita, figuring about a hundred cultivars, kept at the Bibliothèque centrale of the Muséum national d?Histoire naturelle, made in the 18th century by the talentuous Antoine Nicolas Duchesne, of the Royal Garden in Versailles, a forerunner of genetics and evolution. This book by Dr. Harry Paris, a leading expert of Cucurbitaceae, is written both in English and French and is aimed at scientists (e.g., botanists, geneticists, agronomists, horticulturists, science historians) as well as more general readers including gardeners, above all those very numerous fond of cultivated plants, particularly of Cucurbitaceae. Its large format (320 x 440 mm), the diversity and magnificence of its plates and the beauty of its presentation will also attract bibliophiles. This volume is not only the first publication to contain Duchesne?s naming and classification of the three economically most important species of Cucurbita, it also contains Duchesne?s summary of his investigations with this genus. The plates are accompanied by reprinting of appropriate abstracts from Duchesne?s Essai sur l?histoire naturelle des courges together with, by Harry Paris, commentaries on the illustrations with an analysis of existing published and unpublished documents concerning these plates. As for his work on strawberries, here once again is stressed the unfailing tenaciousness and extraordinary sense of observation of Antoine Nicolas Duchesne coupled with quite original and premonitory evolutionary ideas. 606 $aHistory & Philosophy Of Science 606 $ahistoire des sciences 606 $abotanique 606 $abotany 610 $abotany 615 4$aHistory & Philosophy Of Science 615 4$ahistoire des sciences 615 4$abotanique 615 4$abotany 700 $aParis$b Harry S$01286088 701 $aChauvet$b Michel$034923 701 $aGasc$b Jean-Pierre$01286089 701 $aParis$b Harry S$01286088 801 0$bFR-FrMaCLE 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910342954403321 996 $aThe drawings of Antoine Nicolas Duchesne for his Natural History of the Gourds$93019708 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03570nam 2200781 a 450 001 9910791738503321 005 20231211190251.0 010 $a1-84779-574-9 010 $a1-78170-296-9 010 $a1-84779-318-5 024 7 $a10.7765/9781847793188 035 $a(CKB)2560000000085636 035 $a(EBL)1069492 035 $a(OCoLC)818847172 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000712838 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12332408 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000712838 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10649755 035 $a(PQKB)11519670 035 $a(StDuBDS)EDZ0000086971 035 $a(OCoLC)1132664761 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse78063 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1069492 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10623298 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL843622 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1069492 035 $a(DE-B1597)659565 035 $a(DE-B1597)9781847793188 035 $a(EXLCZ)992560000000085636 100 $a20091229d2009 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aRepeal and revolution$b[electronic resource] $e1848 in Ireland /$fChristine Kinealy 210 1$aManchester ;$aNew York :$cManchester University Press ;$aNew York :$cDistributed in the U.S. by Palgrave Macmillan,$d2009. 215 $a1 online resource (327 pages) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a0-7190-6517-8 311 $a0-7190-6516-X 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (p. It places the rising in the context of political changes outside Ireland, especially the links between the Irish nationalists and radicals and republicans in Britain, France and north America. The book concludes that far from being foolish or pathetic, the men and women who led and supported the 1848 rising in Ireland were remarkable, both individually and collectively. This book argues that despite the failure of the July rising in Ireland, the events that let t 606 $aHISTORY / Europe / Ireland$2bisacsh 607 $aIreland$xHistory$yRising of 1848 607 $aIreland$xHistory$yRising of 1848$xCauses 607 $aIreland$xPolitics and government$y1837-1901 610 $aBritish government. 610 $aHabeas Corpus. 610 $aIrish nationalists. 610 $aSpecial Constables. 610 $ajury-packing. 610 $apolitical changes. 610 $aradicals. 610 $arepublicans. 610 $arising. 610 $ayear of revolutions. 615 7$aHISTORY / Europe / Ireland. 676 $a941.5081 700 $aKinealy$b Christine$01518786 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910791738503321 996 $aRepeal and revolution$93828580 997 $aUNINA
