Scholars usually trace the emergence of modern Hinduism to cosmopolitan reform movements, producing accounts that overemphasize the centrality of elite religion and the influence of Western ideas and models. In this study, the author considers religious change on the margins of colonialism by looking at an important local figure, the Tamil Shaiva poet and mystic Ramalinga Swami (1823-1874). Weiss narrates a history of Hindu modernization that demonstrates the transformative role of Hindu ideas, models, and institutions, making this text essential for scholarly audiences of South Asian history, religious studies, Hindu studies, and South Asian studies. 606 $aHinduism$xHistory$d1765- 606 $aHistory$2bicssc 606 $aAsian history$2bicssc 606 $aReligion: general$2bicssc 610 $acentrality of elite religion. 610 $acosmopolitan reform movements. 610 $ahindu modernization. 610 $ahindu studies. 610 $ahinduism. 610 $ahistory of hindu modernization. 610 $aimportant local figure. 610 $ainfluence of western ideas and models. 610 $amargin of colonialism. 610 $aramalinga swami. 610 $areligious change. 610 $areligious studies. 610 $asouth asian history. 610 $asouth asian studies. 610 $atamil shaiva poet and mystic. 615 0$aHinduism$xHistory 615 7$aHistory 615 7$aAsian history 615 7$aReligion: general 676 $a294.509034 700 $aWeiss$b Richard S., $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0910608 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910341146803321 996 $aThe Emergence of Modern Hinduism$92037978 997 $aUNINA
