Recently, there has been a growing interest in understanding migrations, diffusion and spreading outside the ?hard? natural sciences of physics and chemistry, for example the spreading of plants introduced as a result of globalization. Another fascinating story is that of human migration in the distant past, i.e. the immigration of our ancestors who brought agriculture from the Near East, or the fast spread of the Palaeo-Indians into the Americas after the end of the Ice Age. Likewise, the spread of languages in the past, and even more so the current spread and retreat of languages will be described here in terms of diffusion. By understanding these principles, there is hope that some of the less common languages that are threatened by globalization can be saved. Another important implication discussed by the author concerns the outbreak of epidemics; these may be mitigated if we understand their spreading mechanism. Last but not least the spreading of ideas and innovations, a process which changes the world sometimes faster than we wish, can also be usefully described in this picture. 606 $aStatistical physics 606 $aSystem theory 606 $aComputational complexity 606 $aDynamical systems 606 $aSocial sciences?Data processing 606 $aSocial sciences?Computer programs 606 $aEmigration and immigration 606 $aStatistical Physics and Dynamical Systems$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/P19090 606 $aComplex Systems$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/M13090 606 $aComplexity$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/T11022 606 $aComplex Systems$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/P33000 606 $aComputational Social Sciences$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X34000 606 $aMigration$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X24000 615 0$aStatistical physics. 615 0$aSystem theory. 615 0$aComputational complexity. 615 0$aDynamical systems. 615 0$aSocial sciences?Data processing. 615 0$aSocial sciences?Computer programs. 615 0$aEmigration and immigration. 615 14$aStatistical Physics and Dynamical Systems. 615 24$aComplex Systems. 615 24$aComplexity. 615 24$aComplex Systems. 615 24$aComputational Social Sciences. 615 24$aMigration. 676 $a530.415 700 $aVogl$b Gero$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01061979 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910337871203321 996 $aAdventure Diffusion$92521719 997 $aUNINA
