While heterosexual intimate relationships, particularly mixed-race couples, have attracted societal and scholarly attention in South Africa due to the country?s past history of racial segregation, it is, however, striking how little emphasis is placed on understanding same-sex unions in a transforming South Africa. This book is timely and important because it explores the vignettes, complexities and dynamics of interracial gay intimate relationships, an area that hardly gets the scholarly attention it deserves. The book addresses the intersectionality, and the question of how sexuality, gender, racial identity and personal resources influence the relationship as well as the way resilience strategies are drawn upon to sustain the partnership. 410 0$aSpringerBriefs in Sociology,$x2212-6368 606 $aSocial groups 606 $aFamilies 606 $aSex (Psychology) 606 $aGender expression 606 $aSocial structure 606 $aEquality 606 $aSociology of Family, Youth and Aging$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X22080 606 $aGender Studies$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/Y20090 606 $aSocial Structure, Social Inequality$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X22010 615 0$aSocial groups. 615 0$aFamilies. 615 0$aSex (Psychology) 615 0$aGender expression. 615 0$aSocial structure. 615 0$aEquality. 615 14$aSociology of Family, Youth and Aging. 615 24$aGender Studies. 615 24$aSocial Structure, Social Inequality. 676 $a305 676 $a306.8740866 700 $aAdeagbo$b Oluwafemi$01062697 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910337739403321 996 $aThe Dynamics and Complexities of Interracial Gay Families in South Africa: A New Frontier$92527882 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03624nam 22005655 450 001 9910255254903321 005 20240724123138.0 010 $a9783319326245 010 $a3319326244 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-319-32624-5 035 $a(CKB)3710000000897425 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-319-32624-5 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4713767 035 $a(Perlego)3491012 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000897425 100 $a20161006d2016 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurnn#008mamaa 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAdolescent Girlhood and Literary Culture at the Fin de Siècle $eDaughters of Today /$fby Beth Rodgers 205 $a1st ed. 2016. 210 1$aCham :$cSpringer International Publishing :$cImprint: Palgrave Macmillan,$d2016. 215 $a1 online resource (X, 256 p.) 225 1 $aPalgrave Studies in Nineteenth-Century Writing and Culture,$x2634-6508 311 08$a9783319326238 311 08$a3319326236 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aIntroduction: Debating and Defining Adolescent Girlhood at the Fin de Siècle -- 1. It argues that there was a preoccupation with defining, characterising and naming adolescent girlhood at the fin de siècle. These 'daughters of today', 'juvenile spinsters' and 'modern girls', as the press variously termed them, occupying a borderland between childhood and womanhood, were seen to be inextricably connected to late nineteenth-century modernity: they were the products of changes taking place in education and employment and of the challenge to traditional conceptions of femininity presented by the Woman Question. The author argues that the shifting nature of the modern adolescent girl made her a malleable cultural figure, and a meeting point for many of the prevalent debates associated with fin-de-siècle society. By juxtaposing diverse material, from children's books and girls' magazines to New Woman novels andpsychological studies, the author contextualises adolescent girlhood as a distinct but complex cultural category at the end of the nineteenth century. 410 0$aPalgrave Studies in Nineteenth-Century Writing and Culture,$x2634-6508 606 $aLiterature, Modern$y19th century 606 $aEuropean literature 606 $aLiterature$xPhilosophy 606 $aNineteenth-Century Literature 606 $aEuropean Literature 606 $aLiterary Theory 615 0$aLiterature, Modern 615 0$aEuropean literature. 615 0$aLiterature$xPhilosophy. 615 14$aNineteenth-Century Literature. 615 24$aEuropean Literature. 615 24$aLiterary Theory. 676 $a809.034 700 $aRodgers$b Beth$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01058463 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910255254903321 996 $aAdolescent Girlhood and Literary Culture at the Fin de Siècle$92500000 997 $aUNINA
