While it is often claimed that emotional concepts cannot be defined, this work views emotion as a response triggered by actual or perceived events, specifically focusing on the interaction between five primary emotions (Happiness, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Surprise) and cause events. Cause events are examined in terms of two dimensions, namely transitivity and epistemicity. By incorporating the semantic and syntactic information of emotion cause events, this representation of emotion not only provides deep linguistic criteria of emotion cause events, but also offers an event-based approach to emotion classification. A text-driven, rule-based system for detecting the causes of emotion is then developed to establish the validity of the proposed linguistic model for emotion detection and classification. The system shows promising results. 410 0$aStudies in East Asian Linguistics,$x2522-5103 606 $aLanguage and education 606 $aApplied linguistics 606 $aSyntax 606 $aSemantics 606 $aLanguage Education$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/O23000 606 $aApplied Linguistics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/N13000 606 $aSyntax$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/N45000 606 $aSemantics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/N39000 615 0$aLanguage and education. 615 0$aApplied linguistics. 615 0$aSyntax. 615 0$aSemantics. 615 14$aLanguage Education. 615 24$aApplied Linguistics. 615 24$aSyntax. 615 24$aSemantics. 676 $a401.90285 700 $aLee$b Sophia Yat Mei$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01060917 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910337735703321 996 $aEmotion and Cause$92516289 997 $aUNINA
