This book explores these meanings, and identifies some of the problems associated with them, as well as examining the role that values should play in cultural analysis. The development of four, very different, conceptions of culture is traced from the nineteenth century onwards: a notion of aesthetic cultivation associated with Matthew Arnold; the evolutionary view of culture characteristic of nineteenth-century anthropology; the idea of diverse cultures characteristic of twentieth and twenty-first century anthropology; and a conception of culture as a process of situated meaning-making - found today across anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies. These conceptions of culture are interrogated, and a reformulation of the concept is sketched. This book will be of interest to students and scholars across a variety of fields, including anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, and education. . 410 0$aPalgrave pivot. 606 $aCulture 606 $aCulture$xStudy and teaching 606 $aSocial sciences$xPhilosophy 606 $aEthnology 606 $aSociology of Culture 606 $aCultural Theory 606 $aSocial Theory 606 $aSociocultural Anthropology 615 0$aCulture. 615 0$aCulture$xStudy and teaching. 615 0$aSocial sciences$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aEthnology. 615 14$aSociology of Culture. 615 24$aCultural Theory. 615 24$aSocial Theory. 615 24$aSociocultural Anthropology. 676 $a306 676 $a201.7 700 $aHammersley$b Martyn$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0118294 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910337729203321 996 $aThe Concept of Culture$92518220 997 $aUNINA
