Did British rule lead to India?s impoverishment, economic disruption and famine? Under British rule, evidence suggests there were beneficial improvements, with an eventual rise in life expectancy and an increase in wealth for some sectors of the population and economy, notably for much business and industry. Yet many poor people suffered badly, with agricultural stagnation and an underfunded government who were too small to effect general improvements. In this book Roy explains the paradoxical combination of wealth and poverty, looking at both sides of nineteenth century capitalism. Between 1850 and 1930, India was engaged in a globalization process not unlike the one it has seen since the 1990s. The difference between these two times is that much of the region was under British colonial rule during the first episode, while it was an independent nation state during the second. Roy's narrative has a contemporary relevance for emerging economies, where again globalization has unleashed extraordinary levels of capitalistic energy while leaving many livelihoods poor, stagnant, and discontented. . 410 0$aPalgrave Studies in Economic History,$x2662-6500 606 $aEconomic history 606 $aImperialism 606 $aAsia$xEconomic conditions 606 $aAgriculture$xEconomic aspects 606 $aDevelopment economics 606 $aEconomic policy 606 $aEconomic History 606 $aImperialism and Colonialism 606 $aAsian Economics 606 $aAgricultural Economics 606 $aDevelopment Economics 606 $aEconomic Policy 615 0$aEconomic history. 615 0$aImperialism. 615 0$aAsia$xEconomic conditions. 615 0$aAgriculture$xEconomic aspects. 615 0$aDevelopment economics. 615 0$aEconomic policy. 615 14$aEconomic History. 615 24$aImperialism and Colonialism. 615 24$aAsian Economics. 615 24$aAgricultural Economics. 615 24$aDevelopment Economics. 615 24$aEconomic Policy. 676 $a330.954 676 $a330.954035 700 $aRoy$b Tirthankar$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0460938 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910337674903321 996 $aHow British Rule Changed India?s Economy$92225540 997 $aUNINA
