De fait, la modernité littéraire s'est affirmée, au tournant des années 1860-1870, comme refus de la poésie personnelle ? refus d'une première personne située et de ses épanchements lyriques. Pour autant, cette dépersonnalisation ne rompt pas complètement le lien référentiel au réel ; elle le distend plutôt, le transforme, brouille les images, les rend irressemblantes à elles-mêmes. D'un autre côté, l'autobiographie ou le journal personnel présentent, au long des xixe et xxe siècles, divers glissements vers la poésie. L'aveu autobiographique est régulièrement pris en charge par une voix qui se rapproche de celle du sujet lyrique, jusqu'à parfois se confondre quasiment avec elle tout en conservant la référence explicite au vécu.
