Conclusion. 330 $aThis book explores regionalism in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and highlights the influence of the European Union (EU) as an extra-regional actor on the organization and integration process. The analysis is guided by theory and explains the emergence, institutional design and performance of SADC's major integration projects in the issue areas of the economy, security and infrastructure. It provides in this way a profound assessment of the organization as a whole. The study shows that South Africa plays a regional key role as driver for integration while external influence of the EU is ambivalent in character because it unfolds a supportive or obstructive impact. The author argues that the EU gains influence over regional integration processes in the SADC on the basis of patterns of asymmetric interdependence and becomes a 'game-changer' insofar as it facilitates or impedes solutions to regional cooperation problems. 606 $aRegionalism 606 $aAfrica$xPolitics and government 606 $aEurope$xPolitics and government 606 $aPeace 606 $aEconomic development 606 $aRegionalism 606 $aAfrican Politics 606 $aEuropean Politics 606 $aPeace and Conflict Studies 606 $aDevelopment Studies 615 0$aRegionalism. 615 0$aAfrica$xPolitics and government. 615 0$aEurope$xPolitics and government. 615 0$aPeace. 615 0$aEconomic development. 615 14$aRegionalism. 615 24$aAfrican Politics. 615 24$aEuropean Politics. 615 24$aPeace and Conflict Studies. 615 24$aDevelopment Studies. 676 $a320.54 700 $aMuntschick$b Johannes$f1921-2007,$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01876555 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910300494503321 996 $aThe Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the European Union (EU)$94488273 997 $aUNINA
