The two ways of reacting are studied - the movements led by men of action and inspiration, and the thoughts of quietist scholars who laid greater emphasis on calm continuity.  These two streams have often collided and particularly so in the contemporary age of greater violence. Other related problems are also considered: how a non-Muslim should regard the religion of the 'other'; the ways modernization have been dealt with; and the two root causes of Muslim 'rage' today - the invasions of the West and the failure to reach an equitable solution to the problem of Palestine. Building on the author's sixty-year experience researching the history of Islam, the book will appeal to students and scholars across the fields of Islamic studies, religious history and Middle Eastern politics. 410 0$aSt Antony's Series,$x2633-5972 606 $aReligion and politics 606 $aWorld politics 606 $aMiddle East$xPolitics and government 606 $aPolitics and Religion 606 $aPolitical History 606 $aMiddle Eastern Politics 615 0$aReligion and politics. 615 0$aWorld politics. 615 0$aMiddle East$xPolitics and government. 615 14$aPolitics and Religion. 615 24$aPolitical History. 615 24$aMiddle Eastern Politics. 676 $a297.814 700 $aHopwood$b Derek$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0639203 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910300494303321 996 $aIslam's Renewal$91992177 997 $aUNINA
