A new diagnostic approach based on clinicoradiologic correlations is presented, and the ability of computer tomography to offer objective criteria for improved differentiation between stable and unstable or unsafe retraction pockets is explained. Surgical options are discussed, and on the basis of their own clinical and surgical experiences the authors propose a novel procedure, masto-atticotomy with anterior epitympanotomy (AER surgery), which addresses the causative factors underlying a retraction pocket. This surgery aims to restore adequate aeration routes for the middle ear compartments situated above the tympanic diaphragm; it results in better control of the pathology and in most cases prevents its recurrence. The book will assist otologists and surgeons in ensuring that retraction pockets are effectively diagnosed and treated, avoiding progression to cholesteatoma. 606 $aOtorhinolaryngology 606 $aOtolaryngologic surgery 606 $aSurgery 606 $aOtorhinolaryngology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/H46007 606 $aHead and Neck Surgery$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/H46015 606 $aSurgery$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/H59001 615 0$aOtorhinolaryngology. 615 0$aOtolaryngologic surgery. 615 0$aSurgery. 615 14$aOtorhinolaryngology. 615 24$aHead and Neck Surgery. 615 24$aSurgery. 676 $a617.8 676 $a617.85 700 $aMansour$b Salah$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0855599 702 $aMagnan$b Jacques$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 702 $aHaidar$b Hassan$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 702 $aNicolas$b Karen$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910300216103321 996 $aTympanic Membrane Retraction Pocket$92504768 997 $aUNINA
