Some twenty topics are covered, with an abundance of graphs and images to build a comprehensive picture. Each looks at the developments, and the people who initiated them, together with how one led to the next and their subsequent impact on society. Topics include electric supply, lighting through X-rays, and all those appliances that make our homes so comfortable. Most homes at the end of the twentieth century were full of electrical equipment, much of which was regarded as essential. It ran from lights, washing machines, fridges, freezers, kettles, telephones and so on, to the more subtle things such as wipers and starter motors on cars. In 1900, in all but a tiny minority of houses, there were none of these things. It is very difficult for us now to imagine a world without electrical equipment everywhere, and yet it has only taken a century. The Electric Century< examines how we got from then to now. The nineteenth is often described as the century of steam from the impact it had on employment and transport, and The Electric Century makes a similar claim as the description of the twentieth. Electricity and the equipment using it are so pervasive that they have affected every corner of modern life. 410 0$aPopular Science,$x2626-6113 606 $aTechnology 606 $aTechnology?History 606 $aElectrical engineering 606 $aEnergy systems 606 $aComputers 606 $aCommunication 606 $aPopular Science in Technology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/Q36000 606 $aHistory of Technology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/T29000 606 $aElectrical Engineering$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/T24000 606 $aEnergy Systems$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/115000 606 $aHistory of Computing$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/I24024 606 $aMedia and Communication$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/412010 615 0$aTechnology. 615 0$aTechnology?History. 615 0$aElectrical engineering. 615 0$aEnergy systems. 615 0$aComputers. 615 0$aCommunication. 615 14$aPopular Science in Technology. 615 24$aHistory of Technology. 615 24$aElectrical Engineering. 615 24$aEnergy Systems. 615 24$aHistory of Computing. 615 24$aMedia and Communication. 676 $a537.09 700 $aWilliams$b J.B$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0886499 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910299912303321 996 $aThe Electric Century$92510536 997 $aUNINA
