It is often noted that stories of witchcraft circulated in Greek and Latin classical texts, and that treatises dealing with witch-beliefs referenced them. Still, the role of humanistic culture and classical revival in the developing of the witch-hunts has not yet been fully researched. Marina Montesano examines Greek and Latin literature, revealing how particular features of ancient striges were carried into the Late Middle Ages, through the Renaissance and into the fifteenth century, when early Italian trials recall the myth of the strix common in ancient Latin sources and in popular memory. The final chapter also serves as a conclusion, to show how in Renaissance Italy and beyond, classical accounts of witchcraft ceased to be just stories, as they had formerly been, and were instead used to attest to the reality of witches? powers. 410 0$aPalgrave Historical Studies in Witchcraft and Magic,$x2731-5649 606 $aEurope$xHistory$x476-1492 606 $aSocial history 606 $aCivilization$xHistory 606 $aItaly$xHistory 606 $aEurope$xHistory$xTo 476 606 $aHistory of Medieval Europe 606 $aSocial History 606 $aCultural History 606 $aHistory of Italy 606 $aHistory of Ancient Europe 615 0$aEurope$xHistory$x476-1492. 615 0$aSocial history. 615 0$aCivilization$xHistory. 615 0$aItaly$xHistory. 615 0$aEurope$xHistory$xTo 476. 615 14$aHistory of Medieval Europe. 615 24$aSocial History. 615 24$aCultural History. 615 24$aHistory of Italy. 615 24$aHistory of Ancient Europe. 676 $a940.902 700 $aMontesano$b Marina$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0166771 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910299812403321 996 $aClassical Culture and Witchcraft in Medieval and Renaissance Italy$92515384 997 $aUNINA
