Largely inspired by Peter Singer and his 1975 book Animal Liberation, a new wave of animal activism emerged in Australia and across the world. In an effort to draw public and media attention to the plight of animals, such as the rearing of pigs and poultry in factory farms and the export of live animals to the Middle East and South East Asia, Australian activists were often innovative and provocative in how they made their claims. Through lobbying, disruptive methods, and vegan activism, the animal movement consistently contested the politics and culture of how animals were used and exploited. Australians not only observed and learnt from people and events overseas, but also played significant international roles. This book examines the complex and conflicting consequences of the animal movement for Australian politics, as well as its influence on broader social change. . 410 0$aPalgrave Studies in the History of Social Movements,$x2634-6559 606 $aWorld history 606 $aIslands of the Pacific?History 606 $aAnimal welfare 606 $aSocial history 606 $aWorld History, Global and Transnational History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/719000 606 $aAustralasian History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/716000 606 $aAnimal Welfare/Animal Ethics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/H67010 606 $aSocial History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/724000 615 0$aWorld history. 615 0$aIslands of the Pacific?History. 615 0$aAnimal welfare. 615 0$aSocial history. 615 14$aWorld History, Global and Transnational History. 615 24$aAustralasian History. 615 24$aAnimal Welfare/Animal Ethics. 615 24$aSocial History. 676 $a909 700 $aVillanueva$b Gonzalo$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01059143 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910299810103321 996 $aA Transnational History of the Australian Animal Movement, 1970-2015$92504287 997 $aUNINA
