Drawing on a dataset of over 22,000 indictments, the book explores the similarities and differences between how the so-called Bloody Code was administered between, on the one hand, England and Wales, and, on the other, individual English and Welsh counties. Following the introduction, the book is structured in two main sections that trace the criminal justice process in England and Wales respectively. The first chapter in each section examines the pattern of indictments in the respective counties, and explores the crimes for which men and women were indicted, the verdicts handed down, and the sentences passed. The analysis then turns to the patterns of sentences of death, executions and pardons for those capitally convicted of serious crimes against the person and forms of property offences. . 410 0$aWorld Histories of Crime, Culture and Violence,$x2730-9630 606 $aGreat Britain?History 606 $aSocial history 606 $aCrime?Sociological aspects 606 $aEurope?History?1492- 606 $aHistory of Britain and Ireland$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/717020 606 $aSocial History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/724000 606 $aCrime and Society$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/1B3000 606 $aHistory of Early Modern Europe$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/717030 606 $aHistory of Modern Europe$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/717080 615 0$aGreat Britain?History. 615 0$aSocial history. 615 0$aCrime?Sociological aspects. 615 0$aEurope?History?1492-. 615 14$aHistory of Britain and Ireland. 615 24$aSocial History. 615 24$aCrime and Society. 615 24$aHistory of Early Modern Europe. 615 24$aHistory of Modern Europe. 676 $a364.941 700 $aWalliss$b John$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01064790 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910299809603321 996 $aThe Bloody Code in England and Wales, 1760?1830$92540734 997 $aUNINA
