Introduction: illegitimacy in London -- 2. Shame -- 3. Pregnant and birthing bodies -- 4. The workhouse -- 5. Maintenance -- 6. Punishment -- 7. Conclusion -- Notes -- Bibliography.-Index. 330 $aIn this book Samantha Williams examines illegitimacy, unmarried parenthood and the old and new poor laws in a period of rising illegitimacy and poor relief expenditure. In doing so, she explores the experience of being an unmarried mother from courtship and conception, through the discovery of pregnancy, and the birth of the child in lodgings or one of the new parish workhouses. Although fathers were generally held to be financially responsible for their illegitimate children, the recovery of these costs was particularly low in London, leaving the parish ratepayers to meet the cost. Unmarried parenthood was associated with shame and men and women could also be subject to punishment, although this was generally infrequent in the capital. Illegitimacy and the poor law were interdependent and this book charts the experience of unmarried motherhood and the making of metropolitan bastardy. 606 $aSocial history 606 $aGreat Britain?History 606 $aCivilization?History 606 $aWomen 606 $aLaw?History 606 $aSocial History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/724000 606 $aHistory of Britain and Ireland$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/717020 606 $aCultural History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/723000 606 $aWomen's Studies$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X35040 606 $aLegal History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/726000 615 0$aSocial history. 615 0$aGreat Britain?History. 615 0$aCivilization?History. 615 0$aWomen. 615 0$aLaw?History. 615 14$aSocial History. 615 24$aHistory of Britain and Ireland. 615 24$aCultural History. 615 24$aWomen's Studies. 615 24$aLegal History. 676 $a344.420325 700 $aWilliams$b Samantha$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01064607 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910299808503321 996 $aUnmarried Motherhood in the Metropolis, 1700?1850$92539418 997 $aUNINA
