Force est pourtant de constater encore l?insuffisance, voire l?absence, de caractérisation qui puisse autoriser un usage légitime et véritablement fructueux du concept de romanitas. Le premier, Yves Congar s?était ému d?une lacune dans la réflexion des historiens et avait posé de précieux jalons dans un article paru en 1987 dans la Revue des Sciences Philosophiques et Théologiques. Sa démarche constitue toujours très certainement l?effort le plus sérieux qui ait été fait pour clarifier un débat singulièrement actuel. Au cours de la deuxième moitié du xxe siècle, les travaux d?Alphonse Dupront et de Bruno Neveu ont par ailleurs souligné, sur un plan historiographique, la nécessité d?explorer une notion toujours insuffisamment définie.
