I. A discourse-historical approach to the English native speaker -- pt. II. "Good" English and the "best" speakers : the native speaker and standards of language, speech, and writing -- pt. III. Language, nation, and race : of Anglo-Saxons and English speakers conquering the world. 330 $aThe native speaker is one of the central but at the same time most controversial concepts of modern linguistics. With regard to English, it became especially controversial with the rise of the so-called "New Englishes," where reality is much more complex than the neat distinction into native and non-native speakers would make us believe. This volume reconstructs the coming-into-being of the English native speaker in the second half of the nineteenth century in order to probe into the origins of the problems surrounding the concept today. A corpus of texts which includes not only the classics of the nineteenth-century linguistic literature but also numerous lesser-known articles from periodical journals of the time is investigated by means of historical discourse analysis in order to retrace the production and reproduction of this particularly important linguistic ideology. 410 0$aLanguage & social processes ;$vv. 4. 606 $aEnglish language$y19th century$xUsage 606 $aEnglish language$y19th century$xVariation 606 $aEnglish language$y19th century$xSocial aspects 606 $aEnglish language$zEnglish-speaking countries 606 $aHistorical linguistics 610 $aApplied Linguistics. 610 $aEnglish Studies. 610 $aHistorical Linguistics. 610 $aSociolinguistics. 615 0$aEnglish language$xUsage. 615 0$aEnglish language$xVariation. 615 0$aEnglish language$xSocial aspects. 615 0$aEnglish language 615 0$aHistorical linguistics. 676 $a420.9/034 686 $aHF 175$2rvk 700 $aHackert$b Stephanie$01483836 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910786016303321 996 $aThe emergence of the English native speaker$93702135 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01439nam 22004693 450 001 9910828003603321 005 20210901203629.0 010 $a1-922669-06-7 035 $a(CKB)4100000011983458 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC6680923 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL6680923 035 $a(OCoLC)1261364567 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000011983458 100 $a20210901d2021 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAnatomists of Empire $eRace, Evolution and the Discovery of Human Biology in the British World 205 $a1st ed. 210 1$aMelbourne :$cAustralian Scholarly Publishing Pty, Limited,$d2021. 210 4$dİ2020. 215 $a1 online resource (320 pages) 311 $a1-925984-70-2 327 $a9781922669063.pdf -- 9781925984705-t.pdf -- 9781925984705-c.pdf. 517 $aAnatomists of Empire 606 $aSmith, Grafton Elliot, 1871-1937 606 $aGreat Britain 606 $aKeith, Arthur, Sir, 1866-1955 615 0$aSmith, Grafton Elliot, 1871-1937. 615 0$aGreat Britain. 615 0$aKeith, Arthur, Sir, 1866-1955. 676 $a612.00942 700 $aJones$b Ross L$01656078 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910828003603321 996 $aAnatomists of Empire$94008732 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03961nam 22006735 450 001 9910299613403321 005 20250609110607.0 010 $a9783319138008 010 $a3319138006 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-319-13800-8 035 $a(CKB)3710000000394671 035 $a(EBL)2094222 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001501482 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11830232 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001501482 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11446106 035 $a(PQKB)11568914 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-319-13800-8 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC2094222 035 $a(PPN)18548459X 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3109300 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000394671 100 $a20150406d2015 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aFrom Molecules to Materials $ePathways to Artificial Photosynthesis /$fedited by Elena A.
