Postface by Ricard Solé -- Onomastic index -- Subject index. 330 $aSynthetic Biology (SB) is a revolutionary discipline with a vast range of practical applications, but is SB research really based on engineering principles? Does it contributing to the artificial synthesis of life or does it utilise approaches sufficiently advanced to fall outside the scope of biotechnology or metabolic engineering? This volume reviews the development of SB and includes the major milestones of the discipline, the ?top-down? and ?bottom-up? approaches towards the construction of an artificial cell and the development of the ?iGEM? competition. We conclude that SB is an emerging field with extraordinary technological potential, but that most research projects actually are an extension of metabolic engineering since the complexity of living organisms, their tight dependence on evolution and our limited knowledge of the interactions between the molecules, actually make life difficult to engineer. 410 0$aSpringerBriefs in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology,$x2211-9353 ;$v12 606 $aMedicine 606 $aMicrobial genetics 606 $aMicrobial genomics 606 $aGenetic engineering 606 $aEntomology 606 $aComputer simulation 606 $aBiomedicine, general$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/B0000X 606 $aMicrobial Genetics and Genomics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/L32010 606 $aGenetic Engineering$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/C12037 606 $aEntomology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/L25090 606 $aSimulation and Modeling$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/I19000 615 0$aMedicine. 615 0$aMicrobial genetics. 615 0$aMicrobial genomics. 615 0$aGenetic engineering. 615 0$aEntomology. 615 0$aComputer simulation. 615 14$aBiomedicine, general. 615 24$aMicrobial Genetics and Genomics. 615 24$aGenetic Engineering. 615 24$aEntomology. 615 24$aSimulation and Modeling. 676 $a174.957 700 $aPorcar$b Manuel$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01058251 702 $aPeretó$b Juli$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910298348003321 996 $aSynthetic Biology$92498405 997 $aUNINA
