The contentious family classification of Santalales has been thoroughly revised against the background of previous classifications as well as available structural and molecular evidence, and also the classification of Balanophoraceae has been carefully updated. Santalales are predominantly hemiparasites connected with either the branches or the roots of other green land plants, whereas Balanophoraceae are holoparasites that form terrestrial tubers attached to the roots of woody hosts. In both orders, parasitism has led to considerable reductions of the vegetative and reproductive organs and detailed descriptions are given on the initiation of ramal and terrestrial parasitism in Santalales and the haustorial connection and tissue continuity between host and parasite in both groups. The dramatic reduction of the vegetative body in Balanophoraceae, which may lack all vegetative organs typically found in green land plants, has promoted studies in the field of developmental morphology. Thus, the volume not only provides an overview of the diversity of the plant groups treated therein, but also points to the interesting biological peculiarities that have evolved in connection with their singular lifestyle. 410 0$aThe Families and Genera of Vascular Plants,$x2730-6259 ;$v12 606 $aPlants$vClassification 606 $aPlants$vClassification 606 $aPlant anatomy 606 $aPlants$xDevelopment 606 $aBiodiversity 606 $aPlant Systematics/Taxonomy/Biogeography$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/L24051 606 $aPlant Anatomy/Development$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/L24019 606 $aBiodiversity$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/L19031 615 0$aPlants 615 0$aPlants 615 0$aPlant anatomy. 615 0$aPlants$xDevelopment. 615 0$aBiodiversity. 615 14$aPlant Systematics/Taxonomy/Biogeography. 615 24$aPlant Anatomy/Development. 615 24$aBiodiversity. 676 $a570 676 $a571.32 676 $a577 676 $a578.012 700 $aKuijt$b Job$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01060412 702 $aHansen$b Bertel$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910298276403321 996 $aFlowering Plants.
