Conclusions. 330 $aThe collapse of communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe has encouraged political scientists to re-examine the comparative literature on democratisation. A vast literature has now been produced comparing transitions from authoritarianism and democratisation in different parts of the world. However, there are two major omissions in the transition literature. First, the focus of research has primarily been on national level politics, and second, the relationship between federalism and democracy has largely been overlooked. This study seeks to redress this imbalance by moving the focus of research from the national level to the vitally important processes of institution building and democratisation at the local level and to the study of federalism and democratisation in Russia. Federal states are much more difficult to set up than unitary ones, and forging a new federal system at the same time as privatising the economy and trying to radically overhaul the political system has clearly made Russia's transition triply difficult. This book builds on Cameron Ross' earlier work, 'Regional Politics in Russia', by combining theoretical perspectives with empirical work to provide a comparative analysis of the electoral systems, party systems and governmental systems in the ethnic republics and regions and to assess the impact of theses different institutional arrangements on democratisation and federalism. Overall, this study argues that Russia's weak and asymmetrical form of federalism has played a major role in thwarting the consolidation of democracy. Federalism and democratisation in Russia exist in contradiction rather than harmony. In a vicious circle authoritarianism at the centre has been nourished by authoritarianism in the regions and vice versa. 'Elective dictatorships' and 'delegative democracies' are now well entrenched in many republics and authoritarian regimes are firmly established in a majority of the regions. This book will be vital reading for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of Russian politics and democratisation. 606 $aDemocratization 610 $aRussia. 610 $acomparative analysis. 610 $ademocratisation. 610 $aelectoral systems. 610 $aethnic republics. 610 $afederalism. 610 $agovernmental systems. 610 $ainstitution building. 610 $ainstitutional arrangements. 610 $aparty systems. 615 0$aDemocratization. 676 $a321.8 700 $aRoss$b Cameron$0675433 801 0$bNjHacI 801 1$bNjHacl 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910297043903321 996 $aFederalism and democratisation in Russia$91802055 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02268nam 22004333 450 001 9910815211903321 005 20230630002858.0 010 $a9781789143966$b(electronic book) 010 $a1-78914-396-9 035 $a(CKB)4100000011921645 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC6607236 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL6607236 035 $a(OCoLC)1250591312 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000011921645 100 $a20210901d2021 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aBroken dreams $ean intimate history of the midlife crisis /$fMark Jackson 210 1$aLondon :$cReaktion Books, Limited,$d2021. 210 4$d©2021 215 $a1 online resource (272 pages) $cillustrations (black and white) 311 1 $a1-78914-395-0 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $a1. Since the mid-twentieth century, the term has been used to explain infidelity in middle-aged men, disillusionment with personal achievements, the pain and sadness associated with separation and divorce, and the fear of approaching death. This book provides a meticulously researched account of the social and cultural conditions in which middle-aged men and women began to reevaluate their hopes and dreams, reassess their relationships, and seek new forms of identity and fresh pathways to self-satisfaction. Drawing on a rich seam of literary, medical, media, and cinematic sources, as well as personal accounts, Broken Dreams explores how the crises of middle-aged men and women were shaped by increased life expectancy, changing family structures, shifting patterns of work, and the rise of individualism. 606 $aMidlife crisis 615 0$aMidlife crisis. 676 $a155.66 700 $aJackson$b Mark$0914205 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910815211903321 996 $aBroken dreams$94003694 997 $aUNINA
