In the beginning of 1997, it is less clear than ever, if and when the European Monetary Union will eventually be realized, which countries will join in this process, and which countries will benefit from monetary union or are likely to loose out. Using econometric methods, the work attempts to assess the real economic effects of the European Monetary Union. In a first step, differences in labor and goods market adjustment processes between the fifteen member states of the European Union, the United States and Canada are studied in order to evaluate the short-term prospects of monetary union. Turning to the long-run effects, within a second step, convergence of living standards is assessed. 410 0$aSchriften Zur Wirtschaftstheorie und Wirtschaftspolitik Series 517 $aSchriften zur Wirtschaftstheorie und Wirtschaftspolitik vol. 8 517 $aReal Convergence in the European Union 606 $aEconomic theory & philosophy$2bicssc 606 $aMonetary economics$2bicssc 606 $aEconomic growth$2bicssc 607 $aEuropean Union countries$xEconomic integration$xEconometric models 610 $aAnalysis 610 $aConvergence 610 $aEmpirical 610 $aEuropean 610 $aReal 610 $aSchmidt 610 $aUnion 615 7$aEconomic theory & philosophy 615 7$aMonetary economics 615 7$aEconomic growth 700 $aSchmidt$b Christian$4aut$0361359 702 $aStraubhaar$b Thomas$4edt 702 $aSchmidt$b Christian$4aut 801 0$bPH02 801 1$bPH02 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910297039003321 996 $aReal Convergence in the European Union$94175426 997 $aUNINA
