Cette approche pluridisciplinaire sur des aires culturelles variées (Algérie, Allemagne, Autriche, Brésil, Espagne, Pérou et Portugal) démontre, si besoin était, combien la problématique de la mémoire est partagée et combien la mise en commun de réflexions scientifiques approfondies sont sources de richesse et de complémentarité dans la recherche sur les identités d'aujourd'hui et la construction du futur. L'ouvrage s'ouvre sur deux réflexions qui esquissent le cadre de la mémoire : celle d'un psychanalyste, qui souligne les paradoxes de l'oubli (acte manqué ou réussi) et celle de l'historien, qui retrace l'invention de la mémoire historique et s'interroge sur ce concept qui envahit le discours social, politique et scientifique en Espagne.
