La guerra che si apre allora è per una parte una guerra di sopravvivenza, a fronte di un contesto internazionale che vedeva il campo imperiale in gravissima difficoltà, per l'altra è di affermazione di un dominio e di una centralità che non accettano rivali o resistenze. Dopo due anni dall'andamento incerto e dalle sorti altalenanti, il conflitto si decide in un unico scontro. Una battaglia entrata nella storia perché non si trattò soltanto dell'ennesima guerra tra Comuni, così frequenti nel Medioevo italiano, ma anche tra fazioni e persino di guerra civile, militando fuorusciti nell'uno e nell'altro schieramento.
