Ces problèmes se posent de façon encore plus aiguë à propos des représentations de ces comportements depuis la fin de la guerre. C'est l'objet du présent livre. Il analyse de façon critique les reconstructions mémorielles qui tiennent lieu de grilles de lecture des comportements des Français sous l'occupation allemande. Sa première partie aborde de front les représentations dominantes et revisite celles des principaux producteurs de mémoire ? de Gaulle, le parti communiste ? souvent présentés comme les responsables du mythe du « peuple résistant ». Elle réexamine les représentations d'acteurs collectifs spécifiques aux années noires : l'occupant lui-même, les femmes résistantes, les déportés. Elle décentre enfin notre regard en s'attachant aux mémoires régionales, négligées bien que toujours prégnantes, et par une comparaison avec la Belgique voisine. La deuxième partie explore la manière dont les savoirs sur les comportements collectifs sont transmis par les historiens eux-mêmes, ainsi que par les programmes et les manuels en usage dans l'Éducation nationale. Elle souligne combien cette transmission est souvent marquée par des simplifications et des idées reçues.
