Merchants, militiamen, royal servants and missionaries fostered relations between Portuguese enclaves on either side of the ocean. However, these exchanges were interrupted by the end of the Brazilian slave trade in 1850. Nevertheless, after the independence of the Lusophone nations in Africa, direct communications and relationships were reestablished between the two sides of the Atlantic. In the meantime, Brazil had become the nation with the largest population of people of African descent outside of Africa. Today, an economic, linguistic and cultural network again connects different countries and peoples within the South Atlantic, and new geopolitical extensions have appeared with the creation in 2003 of IBSA (India, Brazil and South Africa Forum). This latest volume of Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies explores the historical, geopolitical and cultural aspects of the South Atlantic, past and present." -- Publisher's description. 410 0$aPortuguese literary and cultural studies,$x1521-804X ;$v27. 606 $aCommerce$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00869279 606 $aInternational relations$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00977053 607 $aSouth Atlantic Ocean$xHistory 607 $aSouth Atlantic Ocean$xCommerce$xHistory 607 $aPortugal$xHistory$yModern, 1580- 607 $aPortugal$xRelations$zAngola 607 $aAngola$xRelations$zPortugal 607 $aBrazil$xRelations$zPortugal 607 $aPortugal$xRelations$zBrazil 607 $aAngola$2fast 607 $aBrazil$2fast 607 $aPortugal$2fast 607 $aSouth Atlantic Ocean$2fast 608 $aHistory.$2fast 615 7$aCommerce. 615 7$aInternational relations. 702 $aAlencastro$b Luiz Felipe de 712 02$aUniversity of Massachusetts Dartmouth.$bCenter for Portuguese Studies and Culture. 801 0$bUKMGB 801 1$bUKMGB 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bUAB 801 2$bYDXCP 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bCDX 801 2$bBTCTA 801 2$bBDX 912 $a9910273492603321 996 $aThe South Atlantic, past and present$91978466 997 $aUNINA
