In this ethnography of a contemporary community of professional poet-singers, Dwight F. Reynolds reveals how the epic tradition continues to provide a context for social interaction and commentary. Reynolds's account is based on performances in the northern Egyptian village in which he studied as an apprentice to a master epic-singer. Reynolds explains in detail the narrative structure of the Sirat Bani Hilal as well as the tradition of epic singing. He sees both living epic poets and fictional epic heroes as figures engaged in an ongoing dialogue with audiences concerning such vital issues as ethnicity, religious orientation, codes of behavior, gender roles, and social hierarchies. 410 0$aMyth and poetics. 606 $aRites and ceremonies$zEgypt 606 $aOral tradition$zEgypt 606 $aFolklore$zEgypt$xPerformance 606 $aEpic poetry, Arabic$zEgypt$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEthnology$zEgypt 607 $aEgypt$xSocial life and customs 610 $aFolklore, myths & legends 615 0$aRites and ceremonies 615 0$aOral tradition 615 0$aFolklore$xPerformance. 615 0$aEpic poetry, Arabic$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEthnology 676 $a398/.0962 700 $aReynolds$b Dwight Fletcher$f1956-$0690109 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910272354903321 996 $aHeroic poets , poetic heroes$91241194 997 $aUNINA
