Introduction -- 2. Lecture on the methylmercury poisoning occurred in Minamata (MPM) -- 3. Assignment to students. 330 $aThis book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. It overviews the poisoning which occurred in the 1950s and 1960s among the residents in Minamata who ate seafood contaminated with methylmercury discharged from the chemical factory, Chisso Corporation. It describes the history, symptoms pathogenesis and research on the causal agent, and discusses the responses of Chisso and the national and local governments to the outbreak, the victims, the compensation and environmental restructuring as well as the court ruling on claims. Based on lecture notes from a university course, it includes students? suggestions for avoiding a repeat of the tragedy. The issue has not been settled yet, and this analysis of the incident provides useful insights into solutions to the current global mercury pollution problem. . 410 0$aSpringerBriefs in Environmental Science,$x2191-5547 606 $aPollution prevention 606 $aEnvironmental sociology 606 $aCommunication 606 $aEnvironmental sciences 606 $aEcotoxicology 606 $aIndustrial management?Environmental aspects 606 $aWater pollution 606 $aIndustrial Pollution Prevention$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/U35020 606 $aEnvironmental Sociology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X22160 606 $aEnvironmental Communication$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/412050 606 $aEcotoxicology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/U25001 606 $aCorporate Environmental Management$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/528000 606 $aWaste Water Technology / Water Pollution Control / Water Management / Aquatic Pollution$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/U35040 610 $aMethylmercury intoxication 610 $aMethylmercury poisoning 610 $aPollution-related disease 610 $aNeurological syndrome 610 $aChemical factory pollution 610 $aChisso Corporation 610 $aMinamata disease 610 $aMethylmercury emission 615 0$aPollution prevention. 615 0$aEnvironmental sociology. 615 0$aCommunication. 615 0$aEnvironmental sciences. 615 0$aEcotoxicology. 615 0$aIndustrial management?Environmental aspects. 615 0$aWater pollution. 615 14$aIndustrial Pollution Prevention. 615 24$aEnvironmental Sociology. 615 24$aEnvironmental Communication. 615 24$aEcotoxicology. 615 24$aCorporate Environmental Management. 615 24$aWaste Water Technology / Water Pollution Control / Water Management / Aquatic Pollution. 676 $a363.737 700 $aYokoyama$b Hisashi$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0903802 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910265130603321 996 $aMercury Pollution in Minamata$92020279 997 $aUNINA
