Its geographical coverage spans, from east to west, modern-day Libya and Egypt to Central Asia, and from north to south, Anatolia to southern Arabia, incorporating modern-day Oman and Yemen. Its temporal coverage spans from the late eighth century BCE to the seventh century CE during the rise of Islam and collapse of the Sasanian Empire. The authors argue that the persistence of large states and empires starting in the eighth/seventh centuries BCE, which continued for many centuries, led to new socio-political structures and institutions emerging in the Near East. The primary processes that enabled this emergence were large-scale and long-distance movements, or population migrations. These patterns of social developments are analysed under different aspects: settlement patterns, urban structure, material culture, trade, governance, language spread and religion, all pointing at movement as the main catalyst for social change. This book's argument is framed within a larger theoretical framework termed as 'universalism', a theory that explains many of the social transformations that happened to societies in the Near East, starting from the Neo-Assyrian period and continuing for centuries. Among other influences, the effects of these transformations are today manifested in modern languages, concepts of government, universal religions and monetized and globalized economies. 606 $aHistory$2bicssc 606 $aArchaeology by period / region$2bicssc 606 $aMiddle & Near Eastern archaeology$2bicssc 606 $aGeneral & world history$2bicssc 606 $aRegional & national history$2bicssc 606 $aAsian history$2bicssc 606 $aMiddle Eastern history$2bicssc 606 $aHistory: earliest times to present day$2bicssc 606 $aAncient history: to c 500 CE$2bicssc 606 $aEarly history: c 500 to c 1450/1500$2bicssc 606 $aArchaeology$2bicssc 610 $aempire 610 $astate 610 $anear east 610 $auniversalism 610 $aAchaemenid Empire 610 $aBronze Age 610 $aCommon Era 615 7$aHistory 615 7$aArchaeology by period / region 615 7$aMiddle & Near Eastern archaeology 615 7$aGeneral & world history 615 7$aRegional & national history 615 7$aAsian history 615 7$aMiddle Eastern history 615 7$aHistory: earliest times to present day 615 7$aAncient history: to c 500 CE 615 7$aEarly history: c 500 to c 1450/1500 615 7$aArchaeology 700 $aSquitieri$b Andrea$01788256 702 $aAltaweel$b Mark 801 0$bScCtBLL 801 1$bScCtBLL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910261125303321 996 $aRevolutionizing a world$94322827 997 $aUNINA
