There has been renewed interest in Francisco de Vitoria in the last few years, and he is now at the centre of a debate on such central international topics as political modernity, colonialism, the discovery of the ?Other? and the legitimation of military interventions. All these subjects include Vitoria?s contributions to the formation of the idea of modernity and modern international law. The book explores two concepts of modernity: one referring to the post-medieval ages and the other to our times. It discusses the connections between the challenges that the New World posed for XVIth century thinkers and those that we are currently facing, for example those related to the cyberworld. It also addresses the idea of international law and the legitimation of the use of force, two concepts that are at the core of Vitoria?s texts, in the context of ?modern? problems related to a multipolar world and the war against terrorism. This is not a historical book on Vitoria, but a very current one that argues the value of Vitoria?s reflections for contemporary issues of international law. 410 0$aStudies in the History of Law and Justice,$x2198-9850 ;$v10 606 $aPrivate international law 606 $aConflict of laws 606 $aInternational law 606 $aComparative law 606 $aLaw$xHistory 606 $aLaw$xPhilosophy 606 $aHumanitarian law 606 $aPrivate International Law, International and Foreign Law, Comparative Law 606 $aLegal History 606 $aTheories of Law, Philosophy of Law, Legal History 606 $aInternational Humanitarian Law, Law of Armed Conflict 615 0$aPrivate international law. 615 0$aConflict of laws. 615 0$aInternational law. 615 0$aComparative law. 615 0$aLaw$xHistory. 615 0$aLaw$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aHumanitarian law. 615 14$aPrivate International Law, International and Foreign Law, Comparative Law. 615 24$aLegal History. 615 24$aTheories of Law, Philosophy of Law, Legal History. 615 24$aInternational Humanitarian Law, Law of Armed Conflict. 676 $a340.9 676 $a340.2 702 $aBeneyto$b José María$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aCorti Varela$b Justo$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910255275603321 996 $aAt the Origins of Modernity$91961533 997 $aUNINA
