Using a mass of unpublished and hitherto unused sources in provincial and national archives, it analyses the history, geography and cultural significance of amateur musical societies and sports clubs in eleven départements of France between 1848 and 1914. Original research is set within the context of published historical studies of sociability in France as a whole. It demonstrates that, although these voluntary associations drew upon and extended the traditional concept of cooperation and community, and the Revolutionary concept of fraternity, they also incorporated the fundamental characteristics of competition and conflict. Although intended to produce social harmony, in practice they reflected the ideological hostilities and cultural tensions that permeated French society in the nineteenth century. 606 $aFrance$xHistory 606 $aSocial history 606 $aSports$xSociological aspects 606 $aEurope$xHistory$x1492- 606 $aCivilization$xHistory 606 $aHistory of France 606 $aSocial History 606 $aSport Sociology 606 $aHistory of Modern Europe 606 $aCultural History 615 0$aFrance$xHistory. 615 0$aSocial history. 615 0$aSports$xSociological aspects. 615 0$aEurope$xHistory$x1492-. 615 0$aCivilization$xHistory. 615 14$aHistory of France. 615 24$aSocial History. 615 24$aSport Sociology. 615 24$aHistory of Modern Europe. 615 24$aCultural History. 676 $a944 700 $aBaker$b Alan R.
