How did people in the seventeenth century rationalise and record illness? Observing that medical explanations for illness were fewer than may be imagined, the author explores the social and religious frameworks by which illness was more commonly recorded and understood. The story that emerges is of illness written into personal manuscripts in prescriptive rather than original terms. This study uncovers the ways in which illness, so described, contributed to the self-patterning these texts were set up to perform. 410 0$aPalgrave Studies in Literature, Science and Medicine,$x2634-6435 606 $aLiterature, Modern?18th century 606 $aBritish literature 606 $aFiction 606 $aLiterature?History and criticism 606 $aEighteenth-Century Literature$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/819000 606 $aBritish and Irish Literature$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/833000 606 $aFiction$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/825000 606 $aLiterary History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/813000 607 $aGreat Britain$2fast 608 $aCriticism, interpretation, etc.$2fast 608 $aHistory.$2fast 615 0$aLiterature, Modern?18th century. 615 0$aBritish literature. 615 0$aFiction. 615 0$aLiterature?History and criticism. 615 14$aEighteenth-Century Literature. 615 24$aBritish and Irish Literature. 615 24$aFiction. 615 24$aLiterary History. 676 $a809.033 700 $aThorley$b David$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01058452 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910255235903321 996 $aWriting Illness and Identity in Seventeenth-Century Britain$92499979 997 $aUNINA
