After conducting a critical review of the legal origins literature, the authors first analyze the evolution of legal rules and regulations during the last decade (2006-2014). For that purpose, the book uses legal/regulatory indicators from the World Bank's Doing Business Project (2015). The findings indicate that countries have actively reformed their legal systems during this period, particularly French civil law countries. A process of convergence in the evolution of legal rules and regulations is observed: countries starting in 2006 in a lower position have improved more than countries with better initial scores. Also, French civil law countries have reformed their legal systems to a larger extent than common law countries and, consequently, have improved more in the majority of the Doing Business indicators used. Second, the authors estimate fixed-effects panel regressions to analyze the relationship between changes in legal rules and regulations and changes in the real economy. The findings point to a lack of systematic effects of legal rules and regulations on economic and financial outcomes. This result stands in contrast to the widespread belief that reforms aiming to strengthen investor and creditor rights (and other market-friendly policies) systematically lead to better economic and financial outcomes. 410 0$aContributions to Economics,$x1431-1933 606 $aLaw and economics 606 $aCommercial law 606 $aLaw?Philosophy 606 $aLaw 606 $aFinance, Public 606 $aEconomic policy 606 $aDevelopment economics 606 $aLaw and Economics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/W39000 606 $aBusiness Law$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/529000 606 $aTheories of Law, Philosophy of Law, Legal History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/R11011 606 $aPublic Finance$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/611000 606 $aEconomic Policy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/W34010 606 $aDevelopment Economics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/W42000 615 0$aLaw and economics. 615 0$aCommercial law. 615 0$aLaw?Philosophy. 615 0$aLaw. 615 0$aFinance, Public. 615 0$aEconomic policy. 615 0$aDevelopment economics. 615 14$aLaw and Economics. 615 24$aBusiness Law. 615 24$aTheories of Law, Philosophy of Law, Legal History. 615 24$aPublic Finance. 615 24$aEconomic Policy. 615 24$aDevelopment Economics. 676 $a346.07 700 $aOto-Peralías$b Daniel$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0914223 702 $aRomero-Ávila$b Diego$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910255053703321 996 $aLegal Traditions, Legal Reforms and Economic Performance$92088422 997 $aUNINA
