It presents an approach that links the development of CPD to a series of 'missed opportunities' and the identification of three key themes (mandatory CPD, competencies and regulation/registration) as well as with national regulation for select health professions. It not only relates the evolution of CPD in Australia but also serves as a guide to examining the situation in other countries and the emergence of CPD in individual professions. CPD has been provided for many decades, but it has not been rated as a 'high priority' or a key area of provision and has not been the focus of discussions or disputes in the higher education sector or in vocational education circles. Nevertheless in describing CPD's development, evidence is presented that CPD has made a significant contribution to the broad field of vocational education. 606 $aLifelong learning 606 $aAdult education 606 $aProfessional education 606 $aVocational education 606 $aInternational education  606 $aComparative education 606 $aLifelong Learning/Adult Education$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/O42000 606 $aProfessional & Vocational Education$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/O35000 606 $aInternational and Comparative Education$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/O13000 615 0$aLifelong learning. 615 0$aAdult education. 615 0$aProfessional education. 615 0$aVocational education. 615 0$aInternational education . 615 0$aComparative education. 615 14$aLifelong Learning/Adult Education. 615 24$aProfessional & Vocational Education. 615 24$aInternational and Comparative Education. 676 $a370 700 $aBrennan$b Barrie$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01064745 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910254978403321 996 $aContinuing Professional Education in Australia$92540515 997 $aUNINA
