Once, scholars demanded academic freedom to critique existing knowledge and to pursue new truths. Today, while fondness for the rhetoric of academic freedom remains, it is increasingly criticised as an outdated and elitist concept by students and lecturers alike and called into question by a number of political and intellectual trends such as feminism, critical theory and identity politics. This provocative and compelling book traces the demise of academic freedom within the context of changing ideas about the purpose of the university and the nature of knowledge. The book argues that a challenge to this culture of conformity and censorship and a defence of academic free speech are needed for critique to be possible and for the intellectual project of evaluating existing knowledge and proposing new knowledge to be meaningful. This book is that challenge and a passionate call to arms for the power of academic thought today. 410 0$aPalgrave Critical University Studies,$x2662-7329 606 $aHigher education 606 $aEducation and state 606 $aEducational sociology 606 $aEducational sociology  606 $aEducation and sociology 606 $aSchool management and organization 606 $aSchool administration 606 $aPolitical science 606 $aHigher Education$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/O36000 606 $aEducation Policy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X33030 606 $aSociology of Education$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/O29000 606 $aSociology of Education$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X22070 606 $aAdministration, Organization and Leadership$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/O17000 606 $aPolitical Science$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911000 615 0$aHigher education. 615 0$aEducation and state. 615 0$aEducational sociology. 615 0$aEducational sociology . 615 0$aEducation and sociology. 615 0$aSchool management and organization. 615 0$aSchool administration. 615 0$aPolitical science. 615 14$aHigher Education. 615 24$aEducation Policy. 615 24$aSociology of Education. 615 24$aSociology of Education. 615 24$aAdministration, Organization and Leadership. 615 24$aPolitical Science. 676 $a340 700 $aWilliams$b Joanna$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0640514 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910254975803321 996 $aAcademic Freedom in an Age of Conformity$92511989 997 $aUNINA
