The stereotypical advertising executive might be a pony-tailed, Ferrari-driving, young-ish man, but women have worked in Australian advertising agencies from the first years of the modern industry, and today they comprise half of the industry's workforce. Australian Women in Advertising in the Twentieth Century rescues these women from their obscurity. By employing a broader definition of advertising than usual, this study reveals the important role women have played in the development of the Australian advertising industry, sheds light on women's struggle to reach the higher echelons of the industry, and considers why the popular image of the advertising executive is at such variance from the reality. The experiences of these remarkable women across a century of Australian advertising provide valuable information on the role of gender in the development of this ubiquitous industry, as well as the encroachment of consumer culture. 410 0$aPalgrave pivot. 606 $aCivilization?History 606 $aSocial history 606 $aHistory, Modern 606 $aIslands of the Pacific?History 606 $aIndustries 606 $aCultural History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/723000 606 $aSocial History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/724000 606 $aModern History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/713000 606 $aAustralasian History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/716000 606 $aIndustries$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/527000 607 $aAustralia$2fast 608 $aHistory.$2fast 615 0$aCivilization?History. 615 0$aSocial history. 615 0$aHistory, Modern. 615 0$aIslands of the Pacific?History. 615 0$aIndustries. 615 14$aCultural History. 615 24$aSocial History. 615 24$aModern History. 615 24$aAustralasian History. 615 24$aIndustries. 676 $a306.09 700 $aDickenson$b J$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0898629 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910254789103321 996 $aAustralian Women in Advertising in the Twentieth Century$92007689 997 $aUNINA
